A Challenge to the Government of the Czech Republic

During 1942-1943 there were more than 1300 Roma imprisoned at the concentration camp in Lety u Písku. As a result of the genocidal behavior of the camp management, 326 prisoners died at the camp, of which 241 victims were children. This has been historically documented on the basis of materials in the state archives of the Czech Republic.

During the 1970s, the government of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic allowed an industrial-capacity pig farm to be built on the site of the Lety camp. This farm is still in operation today.

A similar camp was located at Hodonín u Kunštátu. Roma men, women and children were also murdered there. Today, on that very spot, a recreation facility is in operation.

We, the undersigned, therefore call on the Government of the Czech Republic to immediately

relocate the Lety pig farm to an appropriate place;
relocate the Hodonín recreational facility to an appropriate place; and
erect dignified monuments at both sites in consultation with former prisoners and the relatives of the victims.
